Rothwald-Wasenalp
Rothwald Trail on snowshoes
A signposted snowshoe route of 6.26 kilometres that climbs from 1,752 to 2,223 metres and takes around three hours. What makes it special is what it passes through: the larch forest of Rothwald is said to be the highest-altitude in Europe. In winter the trees stand bare and black against the snow, giving quite a different picture from a pine forest. The route is well marked but does involve serious altitude gain. Set off early enough to be back before dark.
