Gornergratbahn

Since 1898, this rack railway has climbed just over nine kilometres from Zermatt to the Gornergrat at 3,089 metres. It's Switzerland's oldest electric rack railway and Europe's highest open-air one. At the top, twenty-nine four-thousanders come into view, with the Gorner Glacier below and the Matterhorn directly opposite. In peak season, trains depart roughly every half hour from eight in the morning. Even those with no interest in trains will spend this ride glued to the window.
