Just past the half-hour mark, but too good to skip: Zermatt and the Matterhorn (±1h10, or by direct train from Brig), the car-free glacier village of Saas-Fee (±50 min), family resort Grächen (±45 min), the dramatic Gondo gorge (±35 to 40 min), the Lötschberg car shuttle to the Bernese Oberland (±30 to 35 min to Goppenstein) and the Glacier Express departing from Brig.
In winter: Zermatt (Gornergrat, Matterhorn Glacier Paradise) and Saas-Fee: two world-famous snow destinations within a good hour.
In summer: The Gornergrat railway, the world's highest revolving restaurant (Allalin, 3,500 m), Lake Oeschinen via the car shuttle and the "slowest express train in the world".
